Lukashenko cautions Belarusians against rushing to buy U.S. dollars

MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) – There is plenty of foreign currency in Belarus but it will be more profitable for citizens to keep their savings in the Belarusian ruble due to the inflation of the U.S. dollar. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he talked to personnel of the Minsk Center of Surgery, Transplantology and Hematology on 25 February, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Foreign currency, exchange rates, and the rest are driven by our craziness. Definitely by our craziness. If we rush to buy foreign currency and feel stressed about it, the exchange rate will climb. I am already a bit romantic about it. I don't interfere as much as I used to 15 or 10 years ago. This is why decide for yourselves. We have plenty of foreign currency.”

The president noted that the U.S. dollar suffers from huge inflation because the USA decided to print a lot of dollars at the height of the pandemic. People did not go to work during the lockdown period either. It led to inflation. “If you want dollars, feel free to switch. But keep in mind: you will lose more in comparison with the Belarusian ruble. But it is up to everyone to decide. We won't try to convince people after so many years,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
