Lukashenko: Brest Oblast alone could feed entire Belarus with bread for a year

MIKASHEVICHI, 5 October (BelTA) – Brest Oblast alone could feed entire Belarus with bread for a year. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during a solemn ceremony held as part of the Dazhynki 2024 harvest festival in Mikashevichi to honor agrarians, BelTA has learned.

According to the head of state, the country pins great hopes onto Brest Oblast, one of the flagships of Belarusian agribusiness.

To elaborate, he mentioned data saying that over the course of a quarter of a century the region’s agricultural output more than doubled. “Brest Oblast alone could feed entire Belarus with bread for a year. According to the most modest estimates, the threshed grain would be enough for 0.5 billion loaves of bread. And the rest could be sufficient for making porridge, alcohol, beer, and combined feed,” the head of state noted.

Brest Oblast was the first region in the republic to begin and end the harvesting campaign. Brest Oblast has already finished sowing winter crops. “It harvested nearly 2 million tonnes of cereals and leguminous crops in a precise, disciplined, and well-organized manner, securing yields of over 38 centners per hectare,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

A number of heroes have contributed to this high accomplishment. Top-performing agricultural enterprises had yields of over 70 centners per hectare. A number of machine operators also demonstrated record-high results.

Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that the countryside produces more than cereals. Brest Oblast has secured a genuine breakthrough in horticulture while focusing on import substitution. At present 60% of Belarusian apples come from Brest Oblast. Early cucumbers from Pinsk and Stolin are as well-known and in demand. Brest Oblast was also the first region to start growing berries – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries – on an industrial scale. “They have set an example for entire Belarus to follow. They shared experience and saplings. They have turned their attention to tulips now. A good endeavor,” the Belarusian leader noted.

The president also remarked that by the end of the year Brest Oblast will take milk production per cow beyond 7,500kg for the first time in its agrarian history. The figure is roughly 20% above the country’s average. “In the past we thought that it is impossible. Today it is reality,” the Belarusian leader stated. “By relying on these accomplishments, one can make new plans. We know that cow milk depends heavily on cow feed. Forage procurement is as important as harvesting the crops. Cutting grass four times a year is a standard practice for you. The key is to keep going, keep up the pace, and always set the bar higher.”
