Belarus U21 team criticized for poor performance

MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko spoke about the latest results of Belarusian football players in international matches as he attended a ceremony to inaugurate the children and youth football center of FC Dinamo Minsk on 3 September, BelTA has learned.

"Why did we see yesterday? It seemed our football players took the field to relax. I was ashamed to see them playing against Iceland," the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also reiterated his requirement to show results and returns on the state investments in sport. He inquired about the average salary of the players of FC Dinamo Minsk. The president was informed that now it is $4,000-5,000, but these are under the old contracts that are in force. With new contracts, it will amount to Br8,000 under new contracts.

On 2 September, the Belarusian U21 team lost 1-2 to Iceland at the start of the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

The Belarusian national team lost 0-1 to the Czech Republic in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Osrava on the same day.
