Belarus president slams quality of coaches' education

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) - The quality of coaches' education is low, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said at the session held on 18 December to discuss the development of summer sports, BelTA informs.

“The education of coaches is terrible,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

In his words, the recent loss of the Belarusian junior ice hockey team can be explained by failures of certain sports functionaries and poor performance of coaches. “We lose to the teams which we easily defeated two years ago. The performance of Dinamo Minsk and the national teams is disgusting. This is the work of coaches,” the head of state said.

“At present lots of people are educated as coaches, and only one third of them work as coaches. Take measures to encourage such graduates to work as coaches. If they do not want to, don't give them their diplomas,” Alexander Lukashenko said. “We need committed and reliable people there. If they come to this university, they must be willing to work as coaches of PE teachers.”

The president said that in certain sports the number of people trained as coaches in the past decade is one a half or even two times higher than the number of people working as coaches. “Where are these coaches?” the Belarusian leader wondered. “Why do we spend money on their education?”

He stressed that young specialists stay in the fields where they have comfortable conditions for life and work. “Coaches are responsible for the search, selection, training and motivation of future champions. On the other hand, the efforts to create comfortable conditions for coaches may help ensure efficient control over their work and the performance of their athletes,” the president believes.
