SCO aims to modernize its activities

MINSK, 1 September (BelTA) – The Shanghai Cooperation Organization heads of state have set the task of modernizing the SCO activities in light of current demands, BelTA learned from a speech made by SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev and published by the SCO website.

Nurlan Yermekbayev noted that the Secretariat is submitting proposals and actively participating in the ongoing work. According to him, current efforts are focused on solving two main tasks: increasing the implementation of proposals put forward by the heads of state during meetings, so that as many initiatives of the leaders as possible are realized, and enhancing the efficiency and tangible outcomes from meetings of heads of sectoral ministries and agencies.
The SCO secretary general informed that the collective work on the establishment of the SCO Universal Center for Countering Challenges and Threats and the SCO Anti-Drug Center is nearing completion.

“With the creation of new institutions, it seems expedient to form a coherent, logical structure for the entire organization, regulating the procedure for interaction between the new centers and the main permanent body – the Secretariat,” he said.

According to Nurlan Yermekbayev, the SCO leaders believe it is necessary to more fully unlock the economic potential of the organization. He recalled that, according to the World Bank data, in 2024 the average economic growth in the SCO space was almost twice the global average, and mutual trade turnover has been steadily increasing year after year. The SCO secretary general said that further momentum could be provided by simplifying trade procedures, developing attractive conditions, regimes, and preferences, and creating an efficient financial institution.
