MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – The move to reopen two border checkpoints with Belarus is driven by economic factors, Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration of Poland Wiesław Szczepański stated today, Bankier.pl reports.
The Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration wants to reopen two border checkpoints with Belarus (Bobrowniki – Berestovitsa and Kuźnica Białostocka - Bruzgi) on 17 November. The corresponding bill has been published on the website of the government legislation center.
Wiesław Szczepański stated on the air of Polskie Radio 24 that the Polish side “sees an increase in traffic at the border.” According to him, the border is now secure. He added that the decision to open the checkpoints was made after consultations with Lithuania.
Currently, the Terespol - Brest border checkpoint is open for vehicular traffic, and the Kukuryki - Kozlovichi checkpoint is open for cargo trucks. Several rail freight checkpoints are also operational.
Previously, on 28 October, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced readiness to reopen two border checkpoints with Belarus in November. He stated that the Bobrowniki and Kuźnica checkpoints would reopen on a "trial basis" following consultations with Vilnius. Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė stated on 30 October that the opening of these border checkpoints was postponed. According to her, such an agreement was reached after her negotiations with Tusk. Polish government spokesman Adam Shlapka later announced that the border checkpoints were still planned to be opened "around mid-November.” Polish business repeatedly emphasized that opening the border with Belarus in the Podlaskie Voivodeship is very important for the economy of eastern Poland.
The Kuźnica border checkpoint was closed in November 2021, and the Bobrowniki checkpoint was closed in February 2023.
