Glazyev: EAEU member states used veto right only several times

MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) – Member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) have used the right to veto only several times in the history of the EAEU and the Eurasian Customs Union, Member of the Board (Minister) for Integration and Macroeconomics of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Sergei Glazyev said at the online briefing on 1 April, BelTA has learned.

“There are almost no conflicts in the EAEU, all decisions are taken by consensus – this is one of our basic principles,” Sergei Glazyev said. “If a country does not agree with the decision of the EEC, it has an opportunity to intercept it by using their right to veto at meetings of the EEC Council of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council. Out of thousands of decisions (over the course of ten years, we have made around 10,000 decisions), there were but a few arguable decisions that were vetoed by member stated,” he added.

The consensus principle enables the EAEU member states to cooperate in an effective manner. There are few points of disagreement as they have common economic interests, Sergei Glazyev noted. “On the other hand, we have the EAEU Court. It deals with lawsuits from enterprises, economic entities, and countries. There have been lawsuits, there have been court decisions that overruled the decisions of the EEC Board. We have an open and modern mechanism to settle disputes, when they arise,” he pointed out.

The member states are mulling over establishing an arbitration court in the EAEU, Sergei Glazyev added.
