CIS observation mission meets with representatives of Belarus' Supreme Court

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – Representatives of the CIS observation mission that will monitor Belarus' constitutional referendum met with representatives of the Supreme Court of Belarus in Minsk on 9 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

The parties discussed the role and responsibilities of the country's courts in preparing and holding the referendum.

In particular, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court - Chairman of the Judicial Collegium for Civil Cases of the Supreme Court Andrei Zabara noted that courts of all levels are entitled to handle complaints related to holding the referendum. He emphasized that the judiciary sticks to the principles of transparency and efficiency. He noted that the country's courts have not considered such cases so far.

In turn, head of the office of the CIS observation mission Leonid Anfimov informed the attendees about the principles of formation and operation of the mission, plans for long-term and short-term observation. He emphasized that the CIS observers will strictly abide by the Belarusian legislation respecting the sovereignty of the state and will objectively assess the preparations and conduct of the referendum.

The parties agreed that the CIS observation mission will be updated on the results of handling complaints and appeals received by Belarusian courts during the referendum campaign.
