Belarus calls on SCO to stand in solidarity against sanctions

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) - Belarus calls on the countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to stand in solidarity against sanctions, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs  Sergei Aleinik said at a meeting of the SCO Foreign Ministers Council in Astana, BelTA has learned.

"Belarus calls on the SCO countries to stand in solidarity against the sanctions pressure which directly or indirectly affects all members of the organization without exception. We look forward to continuing joint constructive work on this issue," Sergei Aleinik said.

Belarus is also ready to actively participate in the SCO humanitarian dimension: sport, science, education, culture, tourism, youth interaction. The minister proposed to mark the beginning of Belarusian membership in the organization by holding the Day of National Cultures of the SCO countries at the 33rd International Festival of Arts Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk in July 2024. This initiative was put forward by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko at a meeting of the SCO summit in 2023 during the Indian presidency.

"We hope to welcome artistic delegations of all SCO member states headed by ministers of culture at this event. I am convinced that the dialogue of cultures and humanitarian ties are important tools for preventing xenophobia and separatism, which give rise to terrorism and extremism," the foreign minister stressed.
