CEC chair: Belarus' referendum is proceeding smoothly

MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – The constitutional referendum is proceeding normally, without any issues, Chairman of the Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko told journalists after he met with head of the CIS observation mission, Deputy Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee - Deputy Executive Secretary Ilkhom Nematov, BelTA has learned.

“All commissions are working in a routine mode. It is the third day of early voting. We can say that the referendum is proceeding according to the plan that we approved at the CEC meeting. Therefore, we have not encountered any problems,” Igor Karpenko said.

According to him, the CEC, district and precinct commissions are open to communication with international observers. “There are 194 of them in the country as of today. Most of them are from the CIS countries,” the head of the CEC noted. “In addition to that, we have more than 44,000 domestic observers. The CEC has not yet received any serious complaints or signals that would prompt us to take urgent measures,” he added.

Igor Karpenko emphasized that during the meeting with the CIS observation mission, the CIS observers thanked the Belarusian side for interaction and openness. “They can move freely across the territory of Belarus. They themselves decide where to go and what commissions to visit. We do not tell them what to do. They act at their own discretion,” he added.
