Belarus, Türkiye to bolster cooperation in ensuring democratic approaches to elections

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – Cooperation between Türkiye and Belarus on democratic election procedures will gain momentum, Chairman of Türkiye’s Supreme Election Council Ahmet Yener said after a cooperation memorandum was signed by the Central Election Commission of Belarus and the Supreme Election Council of Türkiye, BelTA has learned.

Ahmet Yener said: “The document will pave the way for more robust cooperation in improving electoral technologies, notably through the application of high-tech and information technologies, and training election commission officials.Our cooperation to ensure democratic approaches and implement democratic election standards will gain momentum.”
He stressed that the two countries share such goals as increasing young voters’ participation in elections and guaranteeing women’s fair representation in various offices. “So that they could express their opinion and position. We also strive to take all the necessary measures to enable certain categories of voters such as elderly people and those unable to work due to illness to take part in an election campaign. Despite some differences in election systems of Türkiye and Belarus, we are working to ensure that the will of the people is properly reflected. In January 2025 representatives of our Supreme Election Council were present at the presidential election in Belarus and determined on site that the election had been successful and democratic,” the chairman of Türkiye’s Supreme Election Council noted.
Chairman of Belarus’ Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko stated that the document signed today is the result of successful work to formalize the ties and aspirations of both states to enhance cooperation in all areas of the electoral process. “I would like to stress that Belarus and Türkiye have developed kind, trustworthy, and mutually beneficial relations, which cover the majority of areas and are of strategic nature. The heads of our states set the tone in these relations. Meetings of Belarusian and Turkish colleagues as part of foreign observation, international conferences, and forums are also warm and friendly. We cooperate in a constructive manner. This memorandum opens up new prospects for sharing information and mutually studying experience of using modern election information technologies and equipment for holding elections, interacting to raise the professional level of election organizers and the legal culture of voters,” Igor Karpenko noted.
The bilateral meeting took place as part of the 2nd International Election Forum, which will be held in Minsk on 8-9 October. 

Apart from business events, the program of the visit of the Turkish delegation will include an introduction to Belarus’ rich historical and cultural heritage.
