Belarus Honorary Consul's office opens in Japan's Hokkaido

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – A ceremony to open the Belarusian Honorary Consul's office took place in Hakodate, Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan on 8 October, BelTA learned from the Belarusian embassy in Japan.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Japanese parliament, representatives of the Belarusian embassy in Japan, General Consulate of the Russian Federation in Hakodate, administration of Hokkaido Prefecture, Hakodate City Hall, and also regional public organizations, business associations, and clergy.

In his speech, Honorary Consul of Belarus in Hokkaido Prefecture Masato Matsuura noted that thanks to the opening of the office it would be possible to make even more efforts to build bilateral interregional relations.

The decision to appoint an honorary consul was made in June 2021. The priority areas of work for the honorary consul will be the development of bilateral economic, cultural, sports and interregional ties.

It is symbolic that the office of the Honorary Consul is located in the city of Hakodate, where the family of famous Belarusians Iosif and Yelizaveta Goshkevich lived and worked for a long time.

The participants of the event laid flowers at the bust of Iosif Goshkevich and at the grave of his wife Yelizaveta.
