Tourism expected to generate 5% of Belarus' GDP by 2040

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) – The contribution of the tourism sector to Belarus' GDP is expected to reach 5%, Belarus' Deputy Economy Minister Yelena Boligatova told the media on the sidelines of the 3rd Belarus-Russia Tourism Congress, BelTA learned.

"Belarus’ National Sustainable Development Strategy 2040 aims to increase the tourism sector's contribution to GDP to 5%. This is a rather ambitious goal that requires significant effort," Yelena Boligatova noted.

According to the National Statistical Committee, tourism's contribution to the national economy is currently estimated to be 2%, excluding figures from related industries.

Yelena Boligatova highlighted significant prospects for the tourism industry in the country. The inclusion of historical and cultural heritage in the hospitality industry could become a major growth driver, as such sites attract both Belarusians and foreign visitors. The deputy minister emphasized that the government pays considerable attention to this matter. "The measures are primarily aimed at creating new growth points and pillars for the tourism sector. We see significant potential," she added.

According to her, tourism is gaining more importance in the social and economic development programs. The focus is on traditional areas that have proven successful and are in demand among both Belarusians and foreigners. These include medical tourism and health resort treatment. New accommodation facilities are appearing, wellness services are gaining popularity.

Speaking about what hinders the development of the sector, Yelena Boligatova noted the need to improve service quality and infrastructure, including roads connecting historical and cultural landmarks and tourist sites. The country will support projects to construct hotels, health resorts, local glamping sites and other facilities.
