MOSCOW, 19 June (BelTA) – Economic development of Belarus and Russia depends on equal access to energy, Belarus' Energy Minister Denis Moroz said at the session "The Union State: At The Turn Of Eras” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, BelTA learned.
“Cooperation in the development of common energy markets is important. Why? Because equal access to energy resources is essential for the economic growth in the two countries. That was why the Union State Treaty of 1999 envisioned the goals towards the common energy markets,” Denis Moroz said.
According to him, large-scale work has already been done in the Union State to develop the common energy markets. “At the end of last year, the heads of state signed a big agreement on the formation of a common electricity market. In fact, the document will have a significant impact on how we will develop further. Before the signing of the agreement, we worked on the electricity markets though our countries operated to slightly different rules. Now we will synchronize the work and enter a new track when the rules for the two countries will be the same. It is clear that it is impossible to reorganize the system in an instant. This requires certain integration steps. The agreement stipulates that at the first stage we will interact at the level of authorized organizations. Moving forward the integration in the electricity sector will depend on how we move along another energy track – the formation of a common gas market.
"We see very great prospects and are absolutely confident that the cooperation with our Russian colleagues will strengthen the energy security of Belarus and Russia and the Union State as a whole," Denis Moroz said.
