MART: Digital retail is booming in Belarus

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) -  Online commerce has been rapidly growing in Belarus to already amount for 8% of the country’s retail sales, Belarusian Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade (MART) Aleksei Bogdanov said in the talk show “Economic Environment” on Belarus 1 TV channel.

According to the trade register, the number of online stores in the country has exceeded 30,000. This shows a significant growth over the past five years, the minister said.

“All services are developing. It is great that the bank service of cashless payments is available for them,” Aleksei Bogdanov said. “I would like to note that Belarusians are keeping up with the times. The first Belarusian national marketplace has been recently opened and is rapidly developing today.

Belarusian First Deputy Economy Minister Andrei Kartun added that online trade, and e-commerce in general, is a broader sector, a whole sub-branch, as the public procurement system, for example, has also been commercialized in electronic form. Even consumer relations, like the search and purchase of second-hand products through special online services, is also an example of e-commerce.

“The main advantage for the economy is that this is a type of well-organized, civilized trade, where both buyer and seller are protected, and all transactions are transparent, which opens up a sea of opportunities,” Andrei Kartun stressed.

According to Vyacheslav Dragun, director of the association of e-commerce enterprises, one of the reasons for active purchases online is an alternative to offline prices and a huge choice, which is difficult to find in physical stores.

“This is very convenient for consumers. The problem is to protect their rights, but we are actively working on this vector with the regulator - the Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Ministry,” he added.
