MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ gross pork production increased by 6.1% in 2023, Agriculture and Food Minister Sergei Bartosh said at a meeting of the ministry’s board to discuss the performance of the agricultural industry in 2023 and to outline the tasks for 2024 on 30 January, BelTA learned.
“In 2023, gross pork production amounted to 425,000 tonnes, which was up by 6.1% year-on-year. However, the achieved level of production is not enough to fulfill the president's instructions to restore the pork production to the level of 2012. It is also not enough to provide the needs of meat processing enterprises,” Sergei Bartosh highlighted.
The government has decided to purchase grain in order to cover the shortage and to provide the animal husbandry industry with fodder. However, according to the minister, insufficient measures are taken at the local level. “It is important to urgently take the measures and fulfill this task,” he said.
In 2023 Belarus’ gross poultry output totaled 663,000 tonnes, which was up by 3% over 2022, Sergei Bartosh added.
