Maltsev: Events in Europe have changed people's opinion about state border

VITEBSK, 23 March (BelTA) – The events in Europe have changed people's opinion about the importance of border security, Chairman of Belarus' State Border Committee Leonid Maltsev said in Vitebsk on 23 March as he attended a session of the Vitebsk Oblast state border policy commission, BelTA has learned.

“The recent events in Europe and the situation in Ukraine have rapidly changed people's opinion about the state border by demonstrating the importance of its security. For the moment, our two key objectives are to improve the border protection system and implement projects to develop the border infrastructure,” Leonid Maltsev said. The head of the Belarusian border service explained that the first objective is aimed at enhancing the security of the 'green border', that is the sections between the checkpoints. The second objective will help maximize the accessibility of checkpoints for law-abiding citizens. “We have set an ambitious goal to make the border crossing process as convenient as possible. The infrastructure projects are aimed at this,” Leonid Maltsev stressed.

Attending the session also were Belarus' Prosecutor General Alexander Konyuk and Vitebsk Oblast Governor Nikolai Sherstnev. The participants discussed the results of work to ensure border security on the territory of the region in 2015 and identified the key objectives for 2016.
