Higher truck traffic from Belarus to Ukraine explained

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – More trucks are travelling from Belarus to Ukraine now because Russia and Poland have not come to terms on trucking quotas for 2016, BelTA learned from Alexander Tishchenko, Press Secretary of the State Border Committee of Belarus.

According to the source, truck traffic has increased at the Belarusian border checkpoint Mokrany and the Ukrainian border checkpoint Domanovo. “Those are primarily truckers that used to travel via [the Belarusian border checkpoint] Kozlovichi to Poland,” said Alexander Tishchenko. An increase in truck traffic has been registered in the direction of the Baltic states. The increase is attributed to the same reason. “Trucking companies are exploring new options including container transportation via the Baltic states. We advise them to track the queue situation at the border via our website,” said the official.

“We have already held meetings with representatives of the border service agencies of the neighboring countries in order to ensure smooth cargo traffic. The relevant measures have been implemented,” noted Alexander Tishchenko.

Earlier the Ukrainian border service reported an increase in the number of trucks entering the Ukrainian territory from Belarus. The Ukrainian side also attributed the situation to Poland and Russia failing to sign the relevant document on trucking quotas.
