Belarus continues talks on electricity exports to Poland

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – Belarus continues negotiations on electricity exports to Poland, Belarusian First Deputy Energy Minister Leonid Shenets told journalists on 4 May before the beginning of the plenary session of the Belarusian Industrial Forum, BelTA has learned.

“As far as electric power supplies are concerned, they depend on our agreements and the operation of economic entities. We continue negotiating with Poland matters related to the export of electricity. There are good prospects for exports,” Leonid Shenets noted.

The official explained that today Belarus supplies electric power mainly to Lithuania. “As a rule, this is emergency electricity stock used when there is a lack of power or an emergency there. That is to say, we provide Lithuania with technical assistance,” Leonid Shenets said.

As for electricity imports from Russia, the First Deputy Energy Minister pointed out that the issue should always be considered from an economic perspective. “In 2012 we imported some 7.9 billion kWh, and today the figure stands at 2.5 billion kWh. We managed to achieve this, first of all, thanks to commissioning high-performance power generation equipment and reducing the prime cost of electricity,” Leonid Shenets emphasized.

The Belarusian Industrial Forum is running in Minsk on 3-6 May. Attending the forum are more than 200 exhibitors: leading representatives of all sectors of the domestic and foreign industries. The business program is quite busy, with the plenary meeting on innovation and investment in industry in the Republic of Belarus being the central event. At least 30 long-term agreements are expected to be signed during the forum.
