Wang Qiang upsets Vera Lapko in Wimbledon opener

MINSK, 2 July (BelTA) – Belarusian Vera Lapko lost to China's Wang Qiang (15) 2-6, 2-6 in the Wimbledon first-round match, BelTA has learned.

On 1 July Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (No. 40 on the WTA rankings) moved past Alize Cornet of France (51) 6-4, 6-4 in the Wimbledon opener. the Belarusian will take on Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia (49) in the second round.

Earlier two Belarusians bowed out of the Wimbledon singles. Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to Romania's Simona Halep (7) 4-6, 5-7, and Aryna Sabalenka (11th) could not overcome Slovakia Magdalena Rybarikova (139) 2-6, 4-6.

The doubles will see the Belarusian tennis players face each other: Victoria Azarenka and Australian Ashleigh Barty will play against another Belarusian-Australian tandem of Lidziya Marozava and Storm Sanders. Aryna Sabalenka and Belgian Elise Mertens will take on Natela Dzalamidze of Russia and Cornelia Lister of Sweden. Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Ukrainian Lesya Tsurenko will play Bernarda Pera from the United States and Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland.

This season's third Grand Slam will end on 14 July. This year's prize money at Wimbledon totals 38 million pounds.
