MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – Belarus' world number nine Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens of Belgium were off to a good start at the 2019 Miami Open which is underway on 18-31 March in the United States, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian-Belgian duo eased past the U.S. Danielle Collins and her partner Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6:3, 6:0.
Aryna Sabalenka will start her Miami singles run in the second round against either Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia or Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany.
Vera Lapko (64) will face Alize Cornet of France (53). Aliaksandra Sasnovich will take on Viktorija Golubic (77) of Switzerland.
Belarus' world number 46 Victoria Azarenka came from a break down in the third set to capture a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Slovakia's world 35 Dominika Cibulkova in the first round. The Belarusian will next play France's world number 21 Caroline Garcia.
