MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) - Belarus is doing a good job as the host of the 2nd European Games, Elshan Mammedov, the editor of the sports department of the Azerbaijan News Agency Report, told BelTA.
“Belarus is doing a good job as the host of the 2nd European Games though Baku set the bar high. It is very important to keep the prestige of the European Games,” Elshan Mammedov noted.
He drew attention to the great competition among athletes. “Many big-name athletes came to Minsk. This says about the competitiveness of the multi-sport forum,” he said.
He also gave a thumbs up to the organizers of the fan zones. “They are always crowded. There are a lot of tourists. I think it is good for the economy,” the journalist noted.
Baku built a great number of sports facilities ahead of the to the European Games and this infrastructure is now in use, Elshan Mammedov informed. In 2017 the capital of Azerbaijan hosted the Islamic Solidarity Games. The European Youth Olympic Festival will kick off there at the end of July. Baku Olympic Stadium played host to the UEFA Europa League final this year. “No facility that was built in the run-up to the European Games stands idle,” Elshan Mammedov emphasized.
The 2nd European Games are running in Minsk through 30 June. The event features approximately 4,000 of the continent's best athletes from 50 nations competing in 200 medal events held at 12 competition venues.
