MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarusian biathlete Maksim Varabei secured a spot in the flower ceremony following the pursuit race at the fifth leg of the Commonwealth Biathlon Cup in Sochi, Russia, BelTA has learned.
Maksim Varabei started the men’s pursuit in tenth place, trailing the leader by 54 seconds. He recorded one miss at both the first and third shooting ranges, and approached the final standing shoot in ninth position. The Belarusian cleared the standing stage clean, which propelled him up to fourth place. On the final loop, the Belarusian athlete lost a couple of positions and crossed the finish line in sixth. The podium was swept by Russian biathletes Karimulla Khalili, Kirill Bazhin, and Daniil Serokhvostov.
A total of 57 athletes took part in the pursuit race, including 12 Belarusians. Overall Commonwealth Cup standings leader Anton Smolski served two penalty loops and ultimately traded his 15th starting position for 10th at the finish. Also securing spots in the top 25 were Dzmitry Lazouski (14th), Mikita Labastau (20th), Aleksandr Golyak (22nd), and Ivan Tulatin (24th). The women’s pursuit race is set to begin in Sochi at 1 p.m.
