Azarenka, Sabalenka into Australian Open doubles second round

MINSK, 17 January (BelTA) – Belarus' Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka battled into the round of Last 32 of the Australian Open doubles tournament, BelTA has learned.

On 17 January, Victoria Azarenka teaming up with Australian Ashleigh Barty beat a Chinese duo of Shuai Peng and Zhaoxuan Yang 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in the first round. The Belarusian-Australian tandem will next take on Jennifer Brady and Alison Riske of the United States.

The Belarusian-Belgian team of Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Demi Schuurs 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

Earlier in the doubles two more Belarusians had successful openers: Lidziya Marozava and her doubles partner Japan's Shuko Aoyama, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and America's Taylor Townsend. Belarusian Vera Lapko and Chinese Duan Yingying lost to the Latvian-Romanian duo Jelena Ostapenko and Sorana Cirstea 2-6, 7-6, 6-7.

In the singles, Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka will take on America's Amanda Anisimova in the round of Last 32, Aliaksandra Sasnovich will face Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
