Azarenka battles past Cibulkova in Miami opener

MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 46 Victoria Azarenka came from a break down in the third set to capture a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Slovakia's world 35 Dominika Cibulkova in the first round of the 2019 Miami Open, BelTA has learned.

The match lasted for two hours 32 minutes. The Belarusian will next play France's world number 21 Caroline Garcia. Victoria Azarenka won the tournament in Miami in 2009, 2011, and 2016.

Vera Lapko will face Alize Cornet of France. If wins, the Belarusian will then take on Mihaela Buzarnescu from Romania. Aliaksandra Sasnovich will learn her rival once the qualifiers are over. Belarus' world number nine Aryna Sabalenka will start her Miami run in the second round against either Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia or Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany

Ilya Ivashka (World No.110) will open against Italy's world number 90 Thomas Fabbiano.
