3rd European Games to feature 23 sports

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) – The organizing committee of the 3rd European Games 2023 in Krakow and the European Olympic Committees (EOC) have agreed the preliminary list of 23 sports which will be presented at this continent multi-sports event, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus.

The preliminary list was mentioned at the meeting of the EOC Executive Committee in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 22 September. The organizing committee and the EOC worked out a roadmap to facilitate the next important steps in the organization of the 3rd European Games.

EOC Acting President Niels Nygaard focused the attention of the participants on the preparations for international competitions amid the spread of the coronavirus infection.

EOC Secretary General Raffaele Pagnozzi provided an overview of the activities undertaken to prevent COVID-19 spread and noted that the emergency funds provided by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) have now been distributed to the European National Olympic Committees (ENOCs). “We hope the funds will help our member NOCs get through this difficult period,” the secretary general said.

Participants discussed the preparations for the 49th EOC General Assembly, which will take place in Rome on 27 November after being rescheduled from Istanbul. The General Assembly will discuss the date to elect the new EOC president following the death of Janez Kocijancic. It is planned that the election will take place in February 2021.

The Executive Committee considered a proposal from the International Testing Agency (ITA) to run the EOC anti-doping program for the European Games and European Youth Olympic Festivals (EYOF).

The Executive Committee also plans to enter into a cooperative agreement with the Global Esports Federation. President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach, who was in Ljubljana, welcomed the EOC's efforts to develop the Olympic movement. He took part in a memorial event for Janez Kocijancic and in a charity event hosted by the Miroslav Cerar Foundation that raises funds for athletes from socially disadvantaged families.
