Opinion: Belarus, Russia cannot but confront West's aggressive policy

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia cannot but confront the aggressive policy of Western states, Deputy State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Aleksei Kubrin told the media on the sidelines of the international conference “Responding to external challenges and threats: Parliamentary dimension of the Union State [of Belarus and Russia], BelTA has learned.

"Security issues mean that an individual citizen is either guaranteed not to be exposed to any kind of danger or at least he/she understands that society can protect him/her. In the Union State, we consider these issues in a comprehensive way. Security can be provided by the security and military forces. Here our action follows and responds to aggressive policy of Western states against both Russia and Belarus. You know that military exercises are held regularly near our borders. Never before missile systems and tank units have been located so close to Belarus and Russia. This is what we see happening in the Baltic states, Poland today. The same is happening in terms of mobile forces, which are formed primarily by the United States. Naturally, Russia and Belarus cannot but counter these threats," Aleksei Kubrin said.

According to him, the issues of information security deserve special attention. Aleksei Kubrin called to teach people to perceive and analyze information from a very young age.

"The flow of information is enormous. And here it is very important to be able to properly separate the information that is really true and carries the necessary positive data from fake news, from the information distorting the basic ideology. Today, for example, we talked about the distorted history facts. Sometimes misreported facts, not backed by proper analysis, create tensions. This is what happened in Belarus some time ago. Sometimes this happens in Russia too. This is often due to the fact that the information, which is presented as the only truth, is actually not true," Aleksei Kubrin summed up.

The international conference “Responding to external challenges and threats: Parliamentary dimension of the Union State” is held as a hybrid event, as some participants have joined online from Moscow, Minsk, and other cities of the CIS. Taking part in the conference are members of the Parliamentary Assembly and the Belarusian and Russian parliaments, representatives of international organizations, ministries, government agencies, higher education institutions, and research institutes of Belarus and Russia as well as leading experts in law and political science.

The program of the conference includes a plenary session and three sections: “Responding to external challenges and threats. Ensuring rights and liberties of citizens in the Union State and other countries”, “Electoral legislation and its enforcement in Belarus, Russia, and other countries”, “Preserving historical memory, foiling attempts to glorify Nazism and reinterpret the outcomes of the Great Patriotic War”.

The decision to arrange the conference was taken at the 59th session of the Union State Parliamentary Assembly
