MINSK, 23 February (BelTA) –  Russian servicemen previously released from Ukrainian captivity received treatment in Belarus and have now left for home, BelTA reports citing the Belarus 1 TV channel.

As stated in the broadcast, a group of Russian servicemen had been voluntarily handed over by the Ukrainian side. They received all necessary assistance here, from initial examination to rehabilitation. One of the servicemen, who was in more serious condition, underwent surgery and was flown back to Russia on a special plane for further treatment.

The servicemen spent several weeks undergoing treatment at a medical facility in Gomel Oblast. Upon their departure, they expressed their gratitude to the Belarusian doctors and the head of state. “At first, I couldn’t even believe it, I thought it was a dream. But it turned out to be real. We arrived in Belarus, and the exchange happened. They treated us well, took care of us, and gave us all the help we needed. I even had surgery; they removed a piece of shrapnel from my arm. The doctor came by often. Words can’t express my immense gratitude to him [the president of Belarus] for everything he does,” one of the soldiers said.

Throughout their treatment, the servicemen stayed in touch with their relatives. One of them said on air that his parents were very happy to hear the news of their son’s return home. “They also say thank you very much,” he added.

The Belarusian side will continue to carry out its humanitarian mission and assist with the exchange and release of people.

As reported, at the end of last year, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko pardoned 31 Ukrainian citizens. It was noted on air that peacekeeping efforts will continue in the interests of both Russia and Ukraine.
