Mitskevich discusses tasks for Secretariat of Belarusian People’s Congress

MINSK, 2 February (BelTA) – The Secretariat of the Belarusian People’s Congress is set to address very serious tasks, head of the Secretariat Valery Mitskevich told journalists, BelTA has learned.
 
He explained that the Secretariat will be in charge of the preparation of the first and subsequent meetings of the Belarusian People’s Congress. According to the Constitution, the first meeting shall be held no later than 60 days after the single voting day, which will take place on 25 February. Thus, the deadline for the Belarusian People’s Congress is 25 April.
 
At first, deputies of the House of Representatives and local councils will be elected, after that members of the Council of the Republic will be appointed, and after that civil society representatives will pick their delegates. After the composition of the Belarusian People’s Congress is finalized, the date of the meeting will be scheduled, Valery Mitskevich informed.
 
According to him, when making personnel decisions, the president emphasized that a lot of work is head, because a new constitutional body had to be formed in line with the updated Constitution. “It is a new thing. There is a lot of responsibility, because this is the highest representative body, it has very serious powers. Accordingly, the work to arrange the meeting requires a great deal of responsibility. The things [it will discuss will be] impactful,” said Valery Mitskevich.
 
As for the Secretariat, it has not been formed yet and its composition has yet to be determined. According to Valery Mitskevich, it will be a “small team” of about ten people for whom this will be a full time job.
 
Speaking about the headquarters of the Secretariat, Valery Mitskevich informed that this will not be a separate building: “We will be headquartered in existing administrative buildings used by government agencies. In line with preliminary plans, this will be the building of the Belarus President Administration.”
