‘Lending shoulder to Trump’. Analyst comments on potash in Belarus-USA talks

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) - Belarusian potash could become a kind of safety net for U.S. agriculture, given the strained relations between the USA and Canada, political scientist Piotr Petrovsky said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Not without reason did the president of Belarus bring up potash. Canada has always been the main supplier of potash to the United States of America. We see what the relations between the USA and Canada are like today. Trump is trying to pressure Canada, trying to forgo Canadian potash, which is also a certain form of pressure,” said Piotr Petrovsky. “And for him, Belarusian potash essentially serves as a safety net for U.S. agriculture. We are essentially offering a shoulder to Trump.”

Furthermore, the analyst said, the USA was also interested in what Belarus could purchase in turn. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko also spoke on this, calling the list of goods Belarus could buy from the United States a “whole bedsheet”.

“But the question lies elsewhere. If the United States of America wants to be a stable trade and economic partner for Belarus, given such a distant ‘supply line’, they should think not only about how much and what to sell but also about how to establish themselves [in the Belarusian market],” believes Piotr Petrovsky. In his opinion, this could be done, among other ways, through the creation of joint ventures and production facilities.
