Larijani: Interim leadership council will perform duties of Iran’s supreme leader

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – According to Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, the duties of Iran’s supreme leader will be carried out by a leadership council until a successor is elected to replace the deceased Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to Ali Larijani, the leadership council has been formed in accordance with the constitution. “It will perform the duties of the supreme leader until a successor is elected,” reads a report by the Al Alam television channel.

A reminder, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on his residence on the morning of 28 February, according to Iranian state television. Iranian authorities declared 40 days of mourning. The IRNA news agency reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, the head of the judiciary, and one of the members of the Guardian Council will temporarily lead the republic.
