KGB chief: Attempts from outside to put pressure on Belarus' law enforcement, courts

MINSK, 10 March (BelTA) – There are attempts from outside to pressurize the judicial system and law enforcement of Belarus, State Security Committee (KGB) Chairman Ivan Tertel said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA informs.

Ivan Tertel noted that both special services and authorities of each country deal with issues ‘related to interference in domestic affairs of the state'. Belarus is no exception here, especially since the country has faced such a problem.

“It is apparent that there are attempts to exert pressure on our judicial and law enforcement systems on the part of foreign states, including with the use of the diplomatic corps. I cannot imagine such a situation happening, for example, in France, Germany, USA. This is unacceptable,” the KGB chairman emphasized.

He also pointed to the financing of destructive activities in Belarus ‘in the interests of other states'.

A reminder, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko met with Chairman of the State Security Committee Ivan Tertel on 9 March. Ivan Tertel's report to Aleksandr Lukashenko focused on the current activities of the State Security Committee, the situation concerning national security and the protection of the constitutional order.

After the meeting with the head of state, Ivan Tertel drew reporters' attention to several things. “First, unprecedented pressure on our state on the part of foreign partners in relation to the sanction policy and some other things. Second, we are talking about attempts, the report mentioned specific individuals, plans to destabilize the situation soon. I am talking about 25-27 March,” Ivan Tertel said.

In his words, the KGB also sees an increase in terrorist threats. “Unfortunately, they originate from the territory of our neighbors, as a rule, the countries Belarus borders on,” Ivan Tertel stated.

“On the whole, the KGB works. The head of state gave a specific instruction to minimize those threats. We will keep working. We are intent on the effective accomplishment of the tasks. According to our estimates, the situation in the country will be stable and law enforcement agencies have sufficient resources to respond to various threats,” Ivan Tertel assured.
