Belarus, Libya to sign cooperation memorandum in education, inter-university agreements

MINSK, 2 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Libya will ink a cooperation memorandum in education and a number of inter-university agreements, Belarus’ First Deputy Education Minister Aleksandr Bakhanovich told journalists during the visit of the Libyan delegation to the BNTU Science and Technology Park Polytechnic, BelTA has learned.

“We have a long history of educational partnerships with Libya; since 1983, we have been training a variety of specialists for Libya’s economy. First of all, these are engineers and healthcare professionals, defense and national security personnel, and so on. The head of state has set the task to upgrade our relations in all areas. Of course, education is vital for any country. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Libya shows great interest in training specialists for the country's economy. During today’s visit we have agreed to sign a memorandum of cooperation between our countries in order to improve a regulatory and legal framework for our partnerships. In addition to that, we plan to conclude a number of inter-university agreements and respective roadmaps, where we will formalize plans for the joint training of specialists,” noted Aleksandr Bakhanovich.

The first deputy minister emphasized that Libya is primarily interested in training engineering and technology specialists. “They have recently adopted a program to promote engineering and technology education similar to the one passed in our country just a couple of months ago. They are very interested in training highly qualified scientific personnel like candidates and doctors of science. Representatives of the Libyan education sector will soon send their proposals detailing how many specialists they need and across what specialties. I think that we will handle all the technicalities very quickly and get down to training specialists for the Libyan economy,” he said.

Libya’s minister of higher education is confident that cooperation between Libya and Belarus will be gaining momentum. “We will develop ties in education. Yesterday we visited BSMU. Today we toured Belarusian State Agrarian and Technical University and Belarusian National Technical University (BNTU). I had this idea that Belarus has a well-developed system in education and in other areas, but I did not think that it was so advanced. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to visit the Republic of Belarus. I can say that I only expect fruitful cooperation with your country,” the minister stressed.

In Libya, Belarusian universities are well known and their diplomas are highly valued. The minister got families with the BNTU programs and discussed mutually beneficial cooperation.

“Based on our brief conversation, I understood that the minister saw some delicate scientific developments for the first time and was even amazed at a number of them, in the context of the use of ultrasound,” said Georgy Vershina, Director General of the BNTU Science and Technology Park Polytechnic. “He is keen to bring a large delegation from Libya here in a year to see our manufactures, visit the plant that is currently undergoing renovations, a medical devices center under construction, and conclude relevant contracts for internships, scientific research, and in terms of commercial interest in the products made by the technopark based on the developments of BNTU scientists.”
