MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) – It is essential for the defense ministries to build relationships that will meet people's expectations and make them feel safe, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin told Cuban journalists, BelTA has learned.

Viktor Khrenin noted that Cuba is an important partner for Belarus in the international arena and a strategic ally in the Western Hemisphere.

“Despite the geographical distance and cultural differences, our countries are very similar. We defend freedom and independence, social justice and equal cooperation with other countries. We are not afraid of difficulties and do not give up our aims. We are proud of the chosen path of development and do not impose it on anyone,” the defense minister said. “In the situation that has developed in the world and around our countries, people have begun to realize the importance of such simple concepts as stability, calm and peace.”

Viktor Khrenin recalled the words of the Belarusian leader. In one of his speeches the president regretfully said that today military force is the basis of political relations between countries. “Therefore, it is important for the defense ministries to build such relationships that will meet people's expectations and make them feel safe," the minister highlighted. “A good constructive dialogue between friends is always worth a lot and we have such a dialogue with Cuba.”

During the official visit to the Republic of Cuba, Belarusian Defense Ministry Viktor Khrenin and Cuba’s Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces Álvaro López Miera laid flowers at the foot of the mausoleum to honor the Cuban heroes who fought for the freedom of the Cuban people.
