Belarus asks Lithuania to intensify border operations to facilitate truck departures

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) - The State Customs Committee has sent a proposal to the Lithuanian side to intensify border operations for the departing trucks   that have been parked at the designated parking areas in Belarus, Vladimir Orlovsky, the Chairman of the Belarusian State Customs Committee, told the media, BelTA has learned.

Trucks are now able to depart once the storage fee for the vehicles has been paid.

When asked about a possible collapse at the border, Vladimir Orlovsky noted that departures from Belarus to Lithuania and Poland will depend entirely on the neighboring states. “We are ready to release as many trucks for departure as the neighboring side can handle,” he said.

Vladimir Orlovsky drew attention to the fact that Lithuanian customs services work much more slowly than their Polish colleagues. “For example, per day the Lithuanian side clears about 140-160 trucks through two checkpoints, that is, 70-80 trucks through one checkpoint. This is several times below the capacity. The Polish side works more actively, it handles about 700-800 trucks per day. Therefore, we will try to release the maximum number via the Belarusian-Polish route,” Vladimir Orlovsky said.

According to him, Belarus will appreciate, if the Lithuanian side clears the maximum number of trucks and speeds up the work of its customs services. “Today, we have sent a proposal to the Lithuanian side requesting that the checkpoints on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border operate at full capacity, at least during the period when trucks are departing,” he added.

Most of the vehicles parked at the designated areas have Lithuanian registration. There are some road trains where, for example, the prime mover has Lithuanian registration and a trailer has another registration. There are only a few of them. Carriers who wanted to pick up their non-Lithuanian-registered vehicles earlier had such a chance. Most of them used this opportunity. The several dozen that are left will leave as complete road trains together with a Lithuanian vehicle," Vladimir Orlovsky explained.

During this period, vehicles with Lithuanian plates may cross the Belarusian-Polish border if they are owned by Polish companies.

Vladimir Orlovsky emphasized that the work has already begun. All Lithuanian and Polish carriers have been informed and provided with details of the tariffs for parking at the designated places. “Now everything depends on the carriers’ efficiency. When they will be able to send their drivers and pick up the trucks,” Vladimir Orlovsky said.

As BelTA has reported, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, having considered an appeal from Lithuanian and Polish carriers, has made a decision to allow freight vehicles with Lithuanian registration to leave Belarus.

Such vehicles have been stranded in Belarus since November 2025 due to the unfriendly actions by Lithuania involving the closure of border checkpoints on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border.Currently, more than 1,900 transport vehicles, including tractors, trailers, and semi-trailers, are parked in the designated places. Throughout the entire period, their complete safety has been ensured.
