MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Judging by the investments the U.S. makes in everything related to NATO, it could be called the brain of the North Atlantic Alliance, Elena Ponomareva, Doctor of Political Science, Professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert remarked that there has long been talk in Europe that NATO could soon be exhausted and has been living out its final days. “In a major 2019 interview, Macron declared NATO to be ‘brain dead’, a critique originally aimed at the aggressive posturing of newer members, who kept saying, ‘We’ll go north’. Today, however, the central disagreement lies with the actions of the alliance’s core – its primary initiator, financier, and strategic brain: the United States. In fact, if we look at the financial investments, the ideas, and the weapons of NATO, it is, first and foremost, an American project. And in this case, America could easily withdraw from NATO. It wouldn’t lose control, because it has plenty of bases around the world, and it can lease or sell weapons to this fragment of NATO, and offer its advisors. This is entirely possible,” the political scientist noted.

At the same time, she emphasized that the United States could completely lose interest in Europe. This is due to many factors, including the Ukrainian conflict.
