Lukashenko speaks about alternative presidential nominees

MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave his take on the alternative presidential nominees. A piece of the conversation with the journalists was shown on the air of the First News TV channel, BelTA learned.

"This is the most important topic today. I'm trying to get a grasp on the situation now. I am thinking what it is about. Women have nominated their candidate against me, the women's president [a member of the Belarusian Women’s Union Olga Chemodanova]. Her initiative group was registered, wasn’t it?”the president said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said“The most zealous advocate of the president's policy [leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg] Gaidukevich has also put forward his candidacy against the president... I mean as an alternative candidate.”

“The Labor and Justice Party has nominated their candidacy [Aleksandr Khizhnyak, Chairman of the Belarusian Party of Labor and Justice]. And a number of others have nominated their candidates,” the Belarusian leader said.
The head of state was asked to comment on such political activity. “I am trying to understand it. I think it will be difficult for them to move away from their policy. But, nevertheless, these are alternative candidates. I think they just want to safeguard the incumbent president. How else can I see it, especially the nomination of the women’s candidate?” he said. “I'm sure they just want to flank me and keep me safe. Nothing more. I'd love it to be like that.”

When asked whether he is in danger, Aleksandr Lukashenko said: "No, do not worry. We all have gone through a lot during this time. We stood side by side on the barricades. What kind of danger? Maybe there is somewhere, but we have not found it yet.”

At the time this news was published, the CEC had registered the initiative groups of Aleksandr Lukashenko, Oleg Gaidukevich, Aleksandr Khizhnyak and Olga Chemodanova.

Moreover, the CEC received the documents to register an initiative group in support of the nomination of Sergei Bobrikov, Diana Kovaleva and Anna Kanopatskaya as presidential candidates.
