MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) – The USA has made a proposal to sell liquefied natural gas to Belarus, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media, discussing the ongoing dialogue with the USA, BelTA has learned.
“At one point, the question came up of whether we could buy American liquified natural gas (they would deliver it through Poland to Grodno Azot). I said: 'Guys, I would be more than happy to, but can you compete with Russian natural gas?’” the president said. Aleksandr Lukashenko explained at the time that Russian gas arrives via pipeline and at a price lower than on global markets.
“They laughed. I said: ‘Well, there’s your answer.’ I said: ‘I know how to do the math. At Grodno Azot, there are plenty of economists who can also do the math and choose what’s best’,” the head of state recounted. “So I don’t act like the Europeans [the EU countries]. They were told to buy American gas, and that was it, they bought it, even if it was five times more expensive. This is how far the Europeans have overreached.”

The president noted that at this stage, for EU countries, buying Russian gas has become, as they say, “beneath their dignity”. “They are already losing big. The big brother (you probably caught the subtle hint) will now dictate terms to them. And they will have no choice,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The head of state recalled that he had always advocated for preserving the European Union as one of the pillars of the planet and for its cooperation with Russia. “The best thing for them is Russia’s resource base. They need to build normal relations with Russia and with us. Then everything will be fine. But they went the other way. They groveled before the Americans back in Joe Biden’s time. And then they were let down, those Americans, as is happening now,” the president said.
“Well... They failed to do the simplest things. But who is there to do them? You see these ‘girls’ who now head not only the foreign ministry but all the institutions in Brussels. I have nothing against women. You know, I have great respect for them. But these are not like our women. It’s laughable. And they don’t think. That’s their problem,” the Belarusian leader concluded.
