Volfovich comments on CSTO summit results

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) - The international situation is tense and, unfortunately, dangerous, so only together are we able to solve the security issues, Belarusian State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich said as he commented on the results of the CSTO summit in Yerevan to the media on 24 November, BelTA has learned.

“Any problem should always be solved through negotiations, through dialogue, at the negotiating table, finding a consensus. One should know how to make an agreement and find ways to meet the other party halfway and make a step forward to achieve the goals. If we set the goal to ensure peace and security in our countries, then, of course, we have to go towards it,” said Aleksandr Volfovich.

A joint meeting of the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council, the CSTO Defense Ministers Council and the CSTO Committee of Secretaries of Security Councils took place in Yerevan. “The parties considered a wide range of documents, which we agreed upon and submitted for consideration by our heads of state. It was not an easy job. Many issues had to be resolved in dispute. An understanding and agreement was reached on many positions. But, unfortunately, the heads of state sent a number of documents for finalization. I think that the relevant structures will finalize them and the documents will be submitted to the presidents for consideration,” the state secretary said.

"Today the international situation is very tense, explosive, unfortunately. If our organizations fail to work together, shoulder to shoulder, to address these issues then we will not achieve the goal. We need to act together,” he added.

Aleksandr Volfovich said that much attention in Yerevan was paid to cyber defense. The CSTO has launched a new dimension, namely biosafety. The organization is setting up the Coordinating Council on Biosafety.

In 2023, Belarus will take over presidency in the CSTO. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko announced the goals and priorities of the Belarusian presidency at the plenary session of the CSTO Collective Security Council session in Yerevan. Domestically, the goal is to enhance the cohesion of the CSTO member states. Settlement of crises and the prevention of further destabilization in the CSTO area of responsibility will also remain in the spotlight.
