Prominent Russian radio, TV host talks about his attitude to Lukashenko

MINSK, 4 February (BelTA) – The radio and TV host Vladimir Soloviev described Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko as an open yet inflexible person in matters concerning his convictions. The comment was made after the president's interview with Vladimir Soloviev on 4 February, BelTA has learned.

The TV host said: “My attitude to Lukashenko changed when it became clear that he is ready to die for his beliefs. The moment with the assault rifle [on 23 August 2020 Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko went outside the Palace of Independence in order to bolster law enforcement personnel] was the turning point. I said: not [a former Ukraine president Viktor] Yanukovych but also not Salvador Allende [a former Chile president, who committed suicide after a military coup in the country]. Because Salvador Allende took an assault rifle and died. But here one had to take an assault rifle and win.”

The TV host also described Aleksandr Lukashenko as an open person. He explained that this quality allows the Belarusian head of state to remain a wise leader. “If you lose this directness, the level of trust, the desire to trust people, then what leader are you? You not only become completely unapproachable, you don't trust anyone, and you become a most difficult person to interact with. The president has not become such a person,” Vladimir Soloviev stressed. “It is obvious that Lukashenko has no intention of going anywhere, even more so now, in such a difficult period of time. You see he is in an excellent mental and physical form. This external openness does not mislead me because when Lukashenko talks, I can see that this person is very inflexible in matters concerning his beliefs, his perceptions of what is good for Belarus. He is no Yanukovych.”

BelTA reported earlier that Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko gave an interview to a VGTRK reporter, a radio and TV host Vladimir Soloviev. The interview took place in the Palace of Independence in Minsk and lasted for nearly two hours.

The Telegram channel Pul Pervogo revealed several details of the interview: “Why isn't Lukashenko attending the Olympics right now? A fatherland stretching from Minsk to Vladivostok. Comparison with Lee Kuan Yew [a Singaporean politician, one of the creators of the Singaporean economic miracle], traitors and deep underlying reasons, the hottest topics and events of August 2020.”
