FM comments on promising areas of cooperation between Belarus, Lebanon

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) - Belarus offers Lebanon supplies of food, machinery and other goods and is interested in using its port infrastructure, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov told the media after his visit to Lebanon, BelTA learned.

Some businessmen visited Lebanon as part of the Belarusian delegation. They are ready and already working on some areas of cooperation with this country. They also use Lebanon as a gateway for cooperation with other countries.

“The most promising area of cooperation is food supplies, ranging from dried milk, whey powder to specific food commodities. Food can also be re-packed here into smaller batches for local small-scale wholesale. Of course, this is assistance with the revitalization of the Lebanese agricultural sector through the supply of fam machines needed for small farmers and small farms,” the minister noted. “There are big plans to rebuild war-damaged infrastructure. Therefore, our steel, products of our construction industry, relevant machinery, primarily by Amkodor, may be in demand.”

The Belarusian delegation brought 100 tons of milk powder and 10 ambulances to Lebanon as humanitarian assistance, as instructed by the Belarusian president, as a token of friendship.

“We think that if they are satisfied with our ambulances, we may think of bigger shipments,” the minister said.

He also mentioned that Belarus hopes to use the opportunities offered by the Lebanese ports on the Mediterranean coast which could allow Belarus to supply its goods via Lebanon to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.

Maksim Ryzhenkov expressed his hope that the committee for bilateral economic cooperation, which has not met for a long time, will soon resume work. The Belarusian side also seeks to hold ministerial consultations on the international and bilateral agenda more often.

“I think that soon we will start to cooperate through the chambers of commerce and industry and business. As we discussed with the Lebanese president, business should work more actively to develop contacts relying on our full political support. It is more flexible. It knows what is in demand. A lot of entrepreneurs from the Middle East who live in Belarus or who studied here but now live in Lebanon know Belarus very well. They know what our country can offer, what technologies Belarus can share with Lebanon and what goods it can supply. And vice versa,” the minister said. "Because we are also interested in food products from Lebanon: nuts, fruits, and a number of other things that they produce. We will get to know each other a little bit more and, I think, we will be more successful in our cooperation."
