Boao Forum for Asia: SCO states remain committed to international law, multilateralism

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – The Boao Forum for Asia was held in China's Hainan Province from 24 to 27 March under the theme “Shaping a Shared Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation”, BelTA learned from the headquarters of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Beijing.

At the plenary session, Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), noted the growing role of the forum as an authoritative platform for promoting exchanges and cooperation between Asian countries and other regions. He also emphasized the need to further strengthen solidarity and coordination in order to address common challenges.

Sohail Khan, Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, spoke during the panel session “Improving Global Economic Governance: The Role of Global South Countries” emphasizing that the states of this group are the primary driver of global economic growth. He noted that the SCO, which accounts for 40% of the world’s population and approximately one-quarter of global GDP, actively contributes to strengthening the position of Global South countries on the international stage.

Sohail Khan further underscored that, against the backdrop of global instability and economic challenges, the SCO countries remain steadfast in their commitment to the norms and principles of international law, championing multilateralism and equitable, mutually advantageous cooperation. The SCO is becoming an increasingly significant force in the pursuit of just global governance designed to advance the sustainable development agenda.
