Belarusian FM hails Poland’s decision to reopen border crossings as normal pragmatism

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – With its decision to open the border crossings Poland has demonstrated normal pragmatism. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov made the statement on the air of the TV channel First News, BelTA has learned.

When asked to comment on Poland’s decision to open the border crossings, Maxim Ryzhenkov said: “It is good that they have demonstrated such consistency in their ideas. It is very important for politicians to listen to the opinion of their nations and fulfill their promises.”
Apart from that, the minister believes that the opening of the border crossings is significant for restoring normal relations between the countries. “Relations between ordinary people, representatives of the private sector always come first. Politicians catch up only later. This is why the atmosphere, the background are sufficiently positive,” he believes.

According to Maxim Ryzhenkov, by deciding to open the border crossings Poland has demonstrated normal, tough pragmatism.
Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on good neighborly relations with Poland and the Baltic states on 17 November. As he met with Governor of Russia’s Rostov Oblast Yury Slyusar, the Belarusian head of state noted that life would force Poland and the Baltic states to build normal relations with Belarus and Russia.

“Lithuanians are now shrieking and screeching: open the border. We’ve never closed it. And we’ve never treated either Poles or Lithuanians or Latvians bad. They are our neighbors. It’s not like we can do anything about it. Yes, they are currently being managed from the outside,” Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked. “You know, life will force... New people will rise to power who will see interests in Belarus and Russia like before. What was the point of losing these markets, of losing such good relations?”
