MINSK, 24 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Sekreta met with UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Ruvendrini Menikdiwela in Geneva, BelTA learned from the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva.
The Belarusian diplomat welcomed the recent appointment of Barham Salih as UN High Commissioner for Refugees and conveyed congratulations from Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov.
The parties discussed a wide range of bilateral cooperation issues, as well as specific aspects of the refugee situation in the European region and the protection of their rights.
The Belarusian diplomat raised with the UN Refugee Agency the problem of migrants being mistreated by border guards in the countries to Belarus’ west when attempting to get into the European Union.
The deputy foreign minister outlined measures to improve the national asylum system and practical steps to assist refugees and protect their rights. He also expressed gratitude to UNHCR for its long-standing support of Belarus’ efforts.
