Belarus proposes UNSC permanent seats for African, Latin American, Asian countries

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) – The list of permanent members of the UN Security Council needs to be expanded to include countries of Africa, Latin America and Asia, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov said as he addressed the plenary meeting of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, BelTA has learned.

Maxim Ryzhenkov stated that a huge network of international organizations has been established within the UN and a large number of legal documents have been developed. This infrastructure seems to provide an opportunity for effective interaction across the entire spectrum of human activity.
“But if you take a closer look, only a few of the UN organizations remain truly operational. Those who really fulfill their tasks. Why does this happen? It is obvious. The organization must keep pace with the times. This necessitates a reform, first and foremost, of the UN Security Council. I am talking, among other things, about expanding the permanent members by including developing countries of Africa, Latin America and Asia,” the minister emphasized.

At the same time, he noted that the UN is holding the planet back from a new world war because its key mechanism, the Security Council, allows the great powers to discuss matters of war and peace at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield. “However, unfortunately, this body is being used less and less. Its influence on world affairs is not the same anymore. And, let us be frank, the UN has failed to prevent many bloody regional conflicts of our time. And the trend is getting worse,” the Belarusian diplomat said.
