Belarus to build new pulp and board mill

MOGILEV, 17 July (BelTA) - A new pulp and board mill will be built in Belarus, Belarusian Forestry Minister Aleksandr Kulik told the media during a working trip to Mogilev to inspect the progress in the storm recovery effort, BelTA learned.

According to Aleksandr Kulik, there is an overabundance of low-grade lumber in the country. “The issue of wood and low-grade lumber needs to be addressed in a comprehensive way. This can be done only by building another large woodworking enterprise such as Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Mill. The government is closely working on this now,” he said.
The minister noted that the site for a new enterprise has been almost chosen. “Each region would like to host such a plant because these are jobs, infrastructure. It was proposed to build the facility in the north of Mogilev Oblast or on the border of this region and Vitebsk Oblast. It is home to the resources that are in demand now: alder, birch. For example, Gomel Oblast hosts many woodworking enterprises, including Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Plant,” Aleksandr Kulik noted.

Preliminary, the enterprise will be set up in Dubrovno, Vitebsk Oblast. The project will use foreign capital and, will take, approximately, five years. "It will be a large-capacity pulp and board mill. Not every country has such enterprises," the minister said. “Moreover, the country has the resources thanks to the wise state approach to forest management and control on the part of the president over its use. Our extensive forestry experience is being adopted by neighboring countries.”

The project will be another milestone in the development of the woodworking industry. “Back in the day, thanks to the construction of Ivatsevichidrev and Mostodrev we created a band new industry. The products of these enterprises are in great demand and sought-after, even at a time of sanctions,” the minister said.
