Belarus' biggest exporting industries named

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) - Traditionally, Belarus' major exports include products of the agricultural industry, agricultural mechanical engineering, woodworking, chemical industry, and machine-building, Yulia Zubar, the head of the Foreign Trade Forecasting Department at the Economy Ministry of Belarus, told the media on the margins of the second business conference "Belarus’ industrial sector: Export, import independence, effective management" in Minsk, BelTA learned.

"Last year was very successful for Belarusian agricultural exports. We hit a record high of $8 billion in farm exports. Mechanical engineering products did very well too raking more than $12 billion in exports. This was also one of the best performances. Therefore, in general, all our goods are in demand in foreign markets,” Yulia Zubar noted. “We traded with more than 150 countries and continue to build up our presence in these markets.”

Last year there was a boom in rapeseed oil purchases. The demand for this product was great. "But in reality, these are raw material exports. The government seeks to promote high-tech goods, machine-building products, chemicals. They are the ones with higher added value. They contribute higher revenue to the export basket," she explained.

This year Belarus has high hopes on foodstuffs as well. The country has been increasing exports not only to Russia. "We ship products to African countries, Asian countries, and Latin America. Last year we successfully entered the market of African countries with dairy products. This trend will continue. We will offer traditional products, such as meat, butter, milk and also new goods, more high-tech,” she said.

Belarus continues to export IT services and products. “We have diversified sales markets pivoting eastward. We also continue to work with western countries that are ready to work with us,” Yulia Zubar added.
