MINSK, 31 October (BelTA) – Security is in the focus of the organizers of the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Vasily Yurchik, the head of the international relations department at Belarus' National Olympic Committee, deputy chief of the country's mission to the winter games, told the media on 31 October, BelTA has learned.
A briefing on security matters was held with NOC representatives in Pyeongchang, Vasily Yurchik said. “We have heard various statements because of the difficult situation in the region. Some teams are considering withdrawing from the Olympic Games but Team Belarus is definitely going to Pyeongchang,” Vasily Yurchik said.
The first group of the Belarusian delegation will travel to Pyeongchang on 27 January. Before the arrival of the team we will take care of all daily issues, study the conditions for training and competitions, Vasily Yurchik informed. Olympic Village opens its doors on 1 February. When asked about the conditions for athletes, Vasily Yurchik noted that “there will be no need to clean the rooms in Pyeongchang before the arrival of the delegation like it happened in Rio de Janeiro.”
One of the most difficult problems for tourists and fans who plan to go to South Korea to support the team will be accommodation, according to Vasily Yurchik. “All nearby hotels were booked long time ago by participants and representatives of the teams. Pyeongchang region is a famous ski resort. There are many interesting places, and all those who will come to support our athletes will have no regrets. We will be happy to see them there,” he noted.
The Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea will take place on 9-25 February 2018 and will feature 102 medals events in 15 sports.
