Belarusian Paralympians' performance in Rio praised

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) – The performance of the Belarusian athletes at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was successful, Chairman of the Belarusian Paralympic Committee Oleg Shepel said as he welcomed the Belarusian team back from the 15th Paralympic Games, BelTA has learned.

“I am happy with the results. Prior to Rio we had hopes for high results. Our major achievement is the place in the top 20 in the number of medals. The second important achievement is that 19 out of 21 athletes reached the final,” said Oleg Shepel.

The Chairman of the Belarusian Paralympic Committee praised the performance of six-time Olympic champion Igor Boki. “We expected good performance from the swimmer in Rio. He was well-prepared. But, six gold medals is truly a great result. Well done,” Oleg Shepel said.

Belarus finished the 15th Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with 10 (eight gold and two bronze) medals. Apart from Igor Boki, who won seven medals in Rio, gold medals were collected by Vladimir Izotov (swimming) and Andrei Pranevich (fencing). Bronze was taken by javelin thrower Alexander Triputs.
