UN hosts Belarus-initiated roundtable session on human trafficking

MINSK, 7 December (BelTA) – The roundtable session Preparations for the Review of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons in 2017: How to Unite Partners and Ideas took place in the UN headquarters on Belarus' initiative, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“As part of his visit to the United Nations headquarters, Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov participated in the roundtable session Preparations for the Review of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons in 2017: How to Unite Partners and Ideas. The event was organized on Belarus' initiative on behalf of the Group of Friends United Against Human Trafficking,” the ministry said.

The event was co-organized by Austria, Hungary and Liechtenstein, and also by the International Labor Organization.

Valentin Rybakov laid out Belarus' vision for the organization of the UNGA high-level meeting on the review of Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. The Belarusian representative also apprised the roundtable participants of Belarus' initiatives on the international arena in this area of the UN activity.

In line with Resolution 70/179 Improving the Coordination of Efforts Against Trafficking in Persons submitted to the UN on Belarus' initiative, the UN General Assembly decided upon holding a high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to review the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons in October 2017. The Global Plan of Action, initiated by Belarus, was adopted by consensus in 2010.
